Over Charged for One phone call??

Was charged over $400.00 for one (1) phone call while in port on a cruise ship. Was told that although no data was used/received or seen that the phone was roaming while using that call and am being charged for roaming.  How do you make a call without turning on your phone?? This is outrageous!! Very upsetting from a Company that we have done business with for over 25 years!!!! Maybe we need to switch to another service that includes Global with their packages??

Hi Ann,

I'm a bit confused.  In your first sentence you said that you were charged $400 for 1 phone call while in port on a cruise ship...but in your third sentence you said your phone wasn't even on.  Just trying to figure it out...if I missed something please explain.

Data isn't used for calls anyway. Most cruise ships aren't covered with global plans because they have their own tower on the ship and set their own rates. If you made a call and the ship's tower was still on (they supposedly turn them off when the ship is close to the port), you would be using the ship's signal as that one would be the strongest. In other words,  even if it was a domestic port the ship's tower would supersede any local towers. If you made the call then the bill will probably stick.  You also say the phone wasn't turned on, so I don't actually know what the situation was.

That is what the customer service agent told me. I made the phone call from my cell phone and because my phone was on at the time if the call it was roaming for data, hence the charge for roaming and over $400.

My cell phone was turned in to make the call. While on the call I was charged for roaming for data according to Jim with customer service.

Yes, I understand it better now. You were making a call (for which you probably got billed at a roaming rate) and if you didn't have data roaming disabled, then as soon as the phone as turned on it found a data signal and updated your email, Facebook,  and other apps. In the mobile network settings on your phone youcan turn off data while roaming. I know it doesn't help with your current situation,  but for the future, forewarned is forearmed! 🙂
