Should I get insurance on my iphone 6?

Should I choose to get insurance with my iphone 6? I am going to be ordering one and also getting a Lifeproof case. Would it still be a  good idea to get insurance? I'm trying to lower my bills, but also don't want to be left with a busted expensive as can be phone if something did happen to it. What is the replacement price on an iphone 6 if you have to use the insurance?

mws_1984,

Wonderful question! Those are both great ways to protect yourself against accidental damage. The advantage of having insurance is that it will protect you by replacing the equipment. You can keep up with the current Asurion deductibles here: http://bit.ly/1tO7brU . Getting a case will certainly reduce the risk of damage to your phone. You can see the details of Lifeproof here: http://bit.ly/1zbbQFH . I personally have both. It would all depend on the level of risk you are personally comfortable with.

As you figure out the numbers consider this:

To have Apple replace your IP6 screen if only the screen is busted - $109

To have Apple replace your IP6 if you break it more than just the screen - $299

OR

AppleCare+ for $99 for 2 year warranty with damage replacement for $79. Does not cover loss or theft.

I personally find the Verizon Asurion insurance to not be a good bargain and would go with AppleCare+ or save up the money and save it if you would need to do up to a $299 replacement.

Paying for Asurion at the $7/month plan you would pay $168 over 24 months. If you needed a replacement it would be up to $199 deductible. So if you broke you phone halfway through the 24 months, it could cost $283. That is why it makes sense to me to self insure and then at the most you would pay is $299 and be out $16. But if you don't break it, you would save $168.

Self insure is a very smart move and having an older spare phone for the same carrier is even better!

I myself subscribe to Asurion and have found the service to be worth the extra cost. Reason being is replacement phones are sent through overnight shipping. So I can have a phone replacement in as little as 24 hours. With services like SquareTrade you don't get that (not sure if Applecare offers a replacement for something that they can fix but need to send off to have it fixed)

Also the fact that self insured plans do not cover loss or theft is a big one. Asurion covers everything and I think the peace of mind is worth the extra $69 over 2 years.

Also with an iPhone 6 (not the 6 plus) you would fall under a $149 deductible through Asurion per claim.

I personally stopped getting insurance on my devices years ago, and for me it's been a great move. I've only had to replace an iPhone once after a car accident (the other at-fault drivers auto insurance covered my phone thankfully) so for me the money has been better saved versus paying for coverage. But if you're more apt to have accidents with your phones (if you've had to replace more than 2 for example for loss or damage) then you may need to get the coverage.

I've opted out of getting the insurane also.  I've yet to damage my phone or have a need to replace it...but others haven't been so lucky.  It's a roll of the dice...if you're prone to dropping your phone or putting yourself in a situation where damage could occur (i.e. swimming pools, etc) then just maybe it's something to consider...

I was thinking maybe go with the Total phone coverage, so everything is covered. I'm just the type thinking like if I don't use it then it is wasted money, but then if I do need it I'll be happy. Cause they only give you so long before you can't get insurance if you choose to not get it to start when you buy the phone.

I am recently back to Verizon post paid.  Purchased a plan, S5 and Asurion Insurance.  Four months later I decided to drop that insurance and go self insured which really means I eat the cost of any problem.  That's balancing a possible loss of money via self insured vs a guaranteed loss of money to Asurion.  The tipping of the scale for me was  researching Asurion on consumeraffairs.com.  Should have done that at the get-go.

What did you find out about Asurion? I'm in process of trying to order a phone now and am at the insurance section.
