How do I retrieve old text messages?

You can retrieve previous text messages what were backed up to iTunes by doing a restore.  If you haven't backed up in a while then I'm not sure of any exact way to retreive a message.

If you backed any of them up, you can retrieve them via that method.  But, if you never had copies, they may be gone for good.
