Transferring pics old phone to new phone

I just purchased an iPhone 6. I upgraded from an iPhone 5.  All of my pics on the 5 did not come across.  What do I need to do to retrieve them?

Did you set up the new phone with the backup of the old one?

The backup was done at the Verizon store where I purchased the phone.  In my photos section there are empty spaces where the photos previously were and it tries to load but nothing comes up.

My phone was swapped as part of the edge program-- I no longer have it.

Do you recall if you saved the pictures to iCloud or iTunes? If this was not done, there won't be a way to sync the pictures back onto the brand new phone.  http://vz.to/1xMW7xC

Hello - I aooligize I don't know much about the cloud or how pics are saved.  All I know is I took a pic and it was immediately avail on my phone in my photos.  When I swapped the phone all my info contacts, photos, etc were supposed to be transferred to my new phone but only my contacts came across.  It appears the spaces are there where they previously were but say loading when I click on.

I show that I have 1249 photos but they don't load so not sure what's happening so I will probably visit a vzw store for help.

if you backup to iCloud, do a restore from icloud, before the backup is overwritten.
