If your phone has a SIM card, remove it and then reinsert it.  If there is no SIM, then dialing *228 will reset the network connection and update it.

You don't dial that at all for any phone that is 4G. I can't recall if it even works for the iPhone 4 but it definitely isn't needed for any of the later iPhones.

You can go to Settings > General > About. If you are prompted to install a Carrier update, click Update. The iPhone will receive it's carrier updates through iOS updates, and through this "About" menu. At least be sure you are up to date for iOS first.
