Verizon iPhone 5 Charger

When my apple charger broke, as they do all the time, I went to buy a new one and Verizon sold me one of theirs saying it was better.  Now, when I plug it into my computer, it does not recognize the device.  I can plug it into anything else and it will charge, home charger, car charger, even a USB charging device that I have.  But for some reason, on my home computer and my work computer, it won't recognize it, not even to charge.  Luckily, my husband has an iPad so when I need to back up my phone I can use that, but I'm getting very frustrated.  Is it my computer(s) or the charger?  The charger is probably about a year old.
