Why not buy from Apple?

The phone(s) I want are the same price from Apple as my upgrades from Verizon. Is there any benefit to buying from Verizon? Verizon is telling me the phones actually cost in the $600 range, but Apple is selling them starting at $99 for a 5s, $199 for a 6. Why would anyone who doesn't have an upgrade pay $649 for a ph from Verizon when you can get it from Apple for $199? or the 5s from verizon for $500+ and from Apple for $99?

You don't need insurance really- because if it needs repairs and is over what you paid for the ph from Apple you can buy a new one again from Apple  and still get a new ph each time for less money than having Verizon Asurion or Tech Protect  paying  monthy $11 plus $170 for a refurbished ph.

Get the device from Apple. If you are upgrade eligible or a new customer looking for that contract price then do it.

Don't pay full price or the edge program. However you have to be able to get that contract price. If still in a contract you pay full price.

No way around it other than full price on edge or buy from Swappa for a used device.

If you don't have an upgrade you will be paying the same price. No matter where you go.

Also you don't get a new phone from Apple even if you have Apple care. You'll always get a refurbished unless they don't have any in stock.

Verizon has the same prices as Apple. iPhone 5S starting at $99. Of course that is the reduced CONTRACT price. You can only get that price if you are not currently under contract and are willing to sign a new 2 yr contract. Same thing at Apple. If you are not willing/able to sign a new contract, you cannot get that price at either Verizon OR Apple.Smiley Happy

Those prices from Apple are only the upgrade price. If you do not have an upgrade available, the price will be in the $600+ from Apple too, just like Verizon. Do not think you can get a replacement for $99 if you break or lose your phone and you are not ready for an upgrade.

Why would someone buy full price or Edge rather than the contract reduce price. Well because it is usually cheaper in the long wrong.

Quick math.

Full price $649. But since you are not on contract, your monthly line cost is $15 (with 10GB or more) x 24

so that is 649+360=$1009

Now contract price is $199, with $30 upgrade fee, and the monthly line cost will be $40 x 24 months.

So taht is $199+$30+960=$1189

So by buying outright or using Edge, you actually save $180. That is why it makes sense not to buy the contract price. The big savings comes from paying $15/month for line access instead of $40/month on contract (for 10GB or more).

Don't have 10 GB, then the calculation is for $25/month monthly line fee):

$649+ (25*24)=$1249 - slightly more than contract. So if you have less than 10GB, makes more sense for contract, if you have more, use Edge or buy outright.

Similar question- You can buy an iPhone 7+ from Apple for $319, with a 2 year contract with Verizon but no additional payments to Verizon beyond the $20 monthly access fee.  Why not do that rather than the ongoing charge from Verizon totaling $769?  Am I missing something?

Look at the math.  He already broke it down. You replace the $649 with $749, and add a $100 for the down payment on a contract and you have the base price for the 7+.

Because the $20 access fee will increase to $40 when you buy on 2 year contract.

Here is the math:

$319 + $40 upgrade fee + $480 ($20 extra per month for 24 months) = $839

So would you rather pay $839 for a $769 phone, or $769 for a $769 phone?
