iPhone 6 volume

I am having trouble with my iPhone 6. You can barely hear the phone ring even though the volume is on maximum. I have had my phone for 9 months but this problem started a few days ago. Sometimes it sounds like it rings in the distance . I have tried the other ringtones but they are all the same. I don't know what happened. Any suggestions on how to correct it? I've missed several calls because I didn't hear the ringer.

Mechanicsgirl, thanks for reaching out to us and let's get to work on getting your device to ring normally. It's important for this to work properly, we don't want you to miss any important calls. Is the software is up to date on your device? Is there any physical or water damage?

It shows the software as being up to date. To my knowledge there has been no damage to my phone.

How do the speaker ports on the bottom of your phone look? Do they seem to have dirt or can you see the dark grey metal mesh beneath?

Besides the ringer, try playing some music from the phone's loudspeaker. Does it sound both quiet, and crackly? Does it seem to be coming through the glass or trying to seep through the seal of the phone?

It seems quiet and crackly. The best I can tell the sound comes from the bottom speaker.

Okay. Do you have an Apple Store nearby? If your phone is less than a year old, I would suggest taking the device to them so Apple can do an inspection against the device and replace it. The crackling sound is usually an indication that the speaker has a fault or the ports for the speaker are blocked.

Thanks but we don't live near an Apple Store.

That is good to know. We don't want any damage to affect how you hear things with the phone. How does it sound when you power off/on?

Does it sound the same way when you are on speakerphone? Are you using a bluetooth device at all?

If an Apple Store was nearby you could download the Apple Store app and setup an appointment: Apple Store on the App Store

If the device is under warranty (which it seems it is since you have had it less than 12 months) it can be swapped out. You can contact Apple directly to see if they can swap it for you. If it was out of warranty you could have a local phone repair shop fix it more than likely. I had an issue with my iPhone 6 at one point.. after Apple swapped it I no longer had the vol issue.. mine was the volume from the earpiece.
