You can call your mobile number from another phone and when the voicemail picks up, hit #, enter your password and you can check your voice mails.

You can check your text messages by logging into your verizon account and going to my verizon>my device>send and manage messages.

The only way is for you to be registered with iMessages have an iPod touch, Mac computer, or iPad. Your friends will have to be using either of those as well.

This is true. My answer is assuming you use Verizon's Message+. If you use iMessage that's a different story.
