steps to take before selling my IPhone 5S?

Getting my IPhone 6s soon from Verizon and am selling my iPhone 5s. I have some questions:

1. After backing up, turning location services off, deactivating Apple ID, etc., do I need to remove the SIM card? Will I need the SIM card for my 6s? I've heard conflicting reports regarding whether or not to remove or keep SIM card in phone.

2. Once I activate my new phone, does that automatically deactivate my old phone from my account? Or do I need to contact Verizon?

3. What other important tips before selling iPhone 5s?

Thanks in advance! I'm quite the newb at selling old phones...

Yes you need to keep and use your current SIM card in your new iPhone. The buyer will either put their own sim in the phone or get a new one from Verizon.

Power off the old phone before powering on your new one.

But isn't the SIM card for Verizon only used to access the 4g lte? Won't the new iPhone 6s come with a new SIM card that will become mine once I activate it?

Your account info is on that SIM card. Yes it will probably have a SIM card in it when it comes but if you already have one you will be able to pop it in and go. The person you sell your iPhone to will not be able to use your current sim because your phone number is attached to it.
