LTE service? Make sure in settings you have it on. Go to Settings - General - Cellular - Enable LTE.  Also make sure LTE is in your area.

Yea it should be activated on lte the moment you activate. Also depends of its available in your area

I had to do a network reset on my phone to get LTE working (Settings > General > Reset Network Settings)  The phone rebooted and LTE popped up (and is wonderfully fast!)

I received my iPhone 5 in the mail yesterday and had the same issue.  LTE was enabled per the default setting that mentioned, but I was only picking up 3G.  I did a network reset as described and it worked!
