I am a brand new Verizon customer, although I have had an iPhone 2G and an iPhone 4 with ATT.
The good news is that I can finally get cell phone service in my Manhattan apartment. The bad news (apart from the fact that I am being forced to pay for way too many more minutes than I could possibly want) is that the new phone is giving me lots of trouble making call through the contacts app.
When I try to call someone using the contacts app, I get a message saying that I am not signed up for long distance or international calling. This happens with regular old domestic phone numbers. If I manually type in the number to call, it works fine. I never had this problem with my ATT iPhones. What gives?
Any help will be much appreciated.
Try dialing *228 and choosing option 2. If that doesn't work you might need to contact VZW to make sure there isn't something they need to do to your account on their end.
OK great - that seems to have worked!

Which solution worked?

I assume they meant the *228 option 2...but I may be wrong. Perhaps they actually called in? Since they marked mine as the solution I assume it was most likely the *228 solution.
Yes - it was *228 and 2 that did the trick. I marked that as the solution. Thanks again!
OK - alhtough this solution solved one problem. it seems to have triggered another: now contacts names not listed on my SMS conversations - just the numbers. I an confirm that was not the case before I took the steps above.
I still see names for conversations started back when I had ATT, even if they have continued since on Verizon, but any new conversations (some involving some of the same people) do not list names.
Had the same problem. Tried the *228 Option 2 as recommended. Fixed the problem in less than a minute. THANKS for the tip and saving me a call to the support center. Also had the same problem with my previous text messages showing the phone number only. The recent text messages since the *228 seem to be working fine.
Hello balkan,
If you have not resolved the opportunity you were having with the contacts not listed in your sms conversations I have a suggestion. From your device navigate to Settings>Phone>International Assist and if it is on please turn it off. Once you make sure that feature is off return to the home screen and double tap the home button to clear the application manager then power cycle the device. Test a message and if unsuccessful dial *228 send and choose option 1 and let the phone re-program again. When that is complete the device should populate the contact name. You can also find assistance here Please let me know your results. Thank you.
