During a phone call, people on other end, I hear them but they do not hear me...?????

All afternoon, any call I had,  about a couple words in, the person on the other end started saying hello? hello? As I am shouting hello back! It is very frustrating after 5 calls in a row this happened. I'd like to know why it is doing this and what I can do to fix it.

Apple might fix reciever or mic. It could be there phone but if its doing it to you wih everyone gen somthings wrong with the reciever. I had the opposite of You they could hear me but I couldn't hear then mute wasn't on and the only thing that worked was speaker phone. Maybe it's the mic since that's where your voice goes to them. Does every other hint work. I learned the music / tones / speaker phone is the same speaker but phone calls reg are different reciever. If your not near apple call Verizon.

I'm going through the same thing about to be on my 2nd 4S in 2 months, when I put the phone on my ear to talk, I ALWAYS mute, problem is the screen does not go blank like in other iphones, Apple says it has to do with Siri and how you can raise it to your mouth, Apple also neglected to tell us that the antenna on the 4S is on the bottom left, so I have to talk on speaker, if not I either mute or lose reception. I have both Asurion and Apple Care and am at war with Apple, this phone is 2 months old it CLEARLY didn't go through any testing

Hello marci01. I hear you loud and clear and want to help. If you're still having this trouble, please let me know if this just start happening on the 21st. Also, is it on random calls, or calls with particular people, or when you're in a particular area? Are you using the phone with a corded headset or a Bluetooth by any chance? Sometimes, network connection issues on the iPhone 4/4s can be resolved by simply dialing *228 and choosing option 2, followed by restarting the phone http://bit.ly/tXe7I4. It won't erase your phone information, but is a great way to re-establish the communication between your phone and the network.

Keep me posted and have a great day.

Hi Jennifer, I just received my second iphone 4S and I'm having the same problem, when I talk on the phone the screen does not go blank and I put the phone on mute with my ear, so I have to talk on speaker phone to everyone unless I use the apple headphones. Is this an Apple issue? I have Apple care, should I contact them? Have done *228 2 and soft, hard reset and reset network settings. Have you heard of this with the 4S? I had the 3 and the 4 and never had this problem.

This has been happening to me as well since the day I got the phone.  I upgrade the OS in the hopes that it would fix this problem to no avail.  I do not use Bluetooth or headsets.  I have rebooted the phone thinking it may be network connection, but that does not fix the problem.  I have the problem no matter what location I am in.  I want my Droid back!

Hi KNS,

The iPhone 4S is built differently than the 3 and 4 in that it doesn't have the sensor to dim the screen. The best way to get the screen to go dark is to press the On/Off button at the top after the call is made or answered. This will make sure you don't accidentally turn on the "Mute" capability on the phone.

Thank you,

Thanks for the reply MariaC; I tried that on the 1st iPhone 4s (on/off) I had and it had no results same thing...mute, I'm now on my second iPhone 4S and tried your solution, no results, in some cases the on/off button hung up on the caller once I had them on the line, not before but when they said "hello". I find it hard to believe that Apple, not VZW, would manufacture a phone like this (without the sensor), what am I supposed to do? I can't be on speakerphone all the time or bluetooth its annoying and embarrassing. Again, not a problem with VZW, when I called Apple they just want to send me another refurbished one, so I'm kind of stuck here. I've done the erase network settings, reset, restore, like you said its an Apple thing. I have Apple Care, pay insurance every month and bought the original phone (the iPhone 4) which I loved, but it died due to hardware problems) with my AMEX which extends the warranty another year , so the only new phone I've had was the iPhone 4, other than that both 4s have been refurbished. I don't think its fair that I have to upgrade/pay for a new iPhone due to Apple's "cost saving measures" It's nice to see eyesing2 is having the same problem.

Hi Maria C, just wanted to give you and this posting an update; spoke to Apple care about an hour ago. There, is in fact, a sensor to dim the screen, apple tech said 1st solution take off the plastic clear screen cover if one was put on, that's where the sensor is and mine was just 25% covered so I took it off, still mute on my ear, still ends call when power on/off is pushed during call. He informed me to do a restore, which we did both to factory settings and back up from restore. I have to go to the Apple store tomorrow. I'm not trying to be rude or tell you you're wrong, but I wanted to assist anyone else who is experiencing this problem. Also, antenna is on bottom left if phone is facing you which is why coverage may be weak. He said the case really doesn't matter but for testing purposes to take it off, we tested on wi-fi and 3G and I did in fact have less coverage. I'm a bit annoyed b/c tomorrow when I go to the Apple store and if they can't fix it, I'm going to get my 3rd refurbished iPhone 4S, I've only had one new phone the iPhone 4 but the hardware died, so I'm stuck in the endless refurbished iPhone 4S loop. I hope this helps any and all.
