Is it possible to transfer a text message conversation from a friend's iphone 5 to my iphone5? If possible, I would like for the text message conversation to still appear in my main text message app (as opposed to a separate app from a third party).

You can forward the conversation to another number/phone, but it won't have the proper timestamps of the original message and you won't be able to join the conversation like an original participant. It will be more of a reference thing.

Open the conversation on the original phone.

Press and hold any of the individual dialog boxes.

Select "More" when it pops up (next to Copy).

Check any or all of the dialog boxes you want to forward.

Enter the number to which you want the conversation send.

Boom.

Note that this method will not retain the information of the original sender, only that the message originated from the person who forwarded it.
