Lost Phone

Hello,

My boyfriend’s little brother forgot his phone on top of the car and it fell off on the interstate. They were unable to locate it. He still owes a good amount and has no insurance on the phone. What are his options?

Can he buy an unlocked phone and keep making payments on the lost phone?

Sorry to hear about the lost phone.  Without insurance and an outstanding balance on the now-gone phone, one must still make the payments for said phone. ☹️

As for whether a new Verizon version phone or an unlocked one should be purchased as a replacement, that's probably a matter of personal preference.  Carrier phones all come installed with some kind of bloatware in them somewhere, but are also designed to run whatever carrier-specific features are offered.  An unlocked phone means you can use other carriers, but you're on your own if the phone begins acting up, as no carrier will troubleshoot an unlocked phone for you.  And not all of a carrier's features will work on an unlocked phone.  It used to be carrier phones were a little cheaper than unlocked versions, but this may no longer be true.

P.S. - I would report the lost phone to Verizon as being lost and unrecoverable, so they can permanently shut down the phone just in case someone does come across it and it somehow is still functioning...although if it blew off on a freeway, I'd have to think it was destroyed.  But doesn't hurt to shut down the phone to be safe.
