Surfing and Facebook includes videos and images, easily adding up to 2 GBS a day. The settings that control data use for social networking sights are within the app.
IF you have home wifi you can reduce mobile data use by limiting each app to wifi only by restricting background data.
if you don't have home wifi high data use is expected. Updates and backup alone will add to your data use.

Open settings, cellular data. Scroll down and turn off the switch next to any app that you don't want using mobile data.

We are having the same problem. I swear verizon is scamming us out of money. We've never had a problem going over. So far this month they are saying we've used 14gb of data!!!! And we still have 4 days left in our billing cycle. I wish someone could look into this. It is so frustrating.

Did you check what app on the phone is using data? It's not scamming, but an app using data, intentionally or unintentionally.

the information to "look into" the problem is in your hand. The only accurate information on data use is in the settings on your phones, under data usage.
LOok at which phone and what applications on that phone are using large amounts of data.
