Note: You can select the area code and prefix for your new mobile number. The last 4 digits will be automatically assigned to you based on what's available.

Tikibar1 did a great job explaining it for postpaid lines, thanks! If you have a prepaid line however, I think the best way to change your number is simply to let the prepaid plan expire, and then the service automatically cancels. Then contact Verizon to get a new prepaid line.
