Phone support in Philippines finally pays off!

After 6+ unsuccessful chat attempts, I was able to connect by voice to a CSR, I think in the Philippines, who knew the Android phone very well, and was able to walk me through a network reset. I'm not sure that this will correct all the issues connecting to Verizon cell towers, but 24 hours in, it seems to be working okay. I'm still perplexed with why Verizon, or any large consumer organization, makes it so hard to connect with someone by voice. But for now, I'm very pleased with the technical skills of one CSR.
