Put in my serial for trade in, told $700 credit, now $350 WITH contract?

We traded in a phone, entered the serial number, was told we would get a $700 trade-in credit. Now apple is saying that verizon told them it was a different phone based on the serial? I had a chat with apple and it sounds like this happens often, that you can't trust the serial input database - however, if I don't accept the $350, I still have to stay in this 24 month contract??

How is this not bait and switch? Why have me enter a serial number at all if it spits back out the wrong device?

Good morning, jjjjj404. Just to clarify, was this trade done with Apple or Verizon Wireless? Are you stating the IMEI did not match up with what was expected vs what was received?-Marshall

I went to Verizon's website and click upgrade, essentially agreed to go back onto a contract with a phone trade in. I'm not sure if it was formally done via apple.com, however my phone was returned to apple. I contact apple about this, and they seemed to be aware that the verizon serial doesn't always match up with the correct phone.
