Verizon Iphone 4s can roam GSM in Mexico?

I need to switch to Verizon or ATT from Sprint because they both have roaming plans for Mexico where I dont pay any roaming fees. Most of Mexico is GSM with a very small CDMA carrier in most major cities.

AT&T service is just ok in my area but they have amazing GSM-Telcel roaming coverage in Mexico.

Verizon has amazing CDMA service in my area but mediocre CDMA roaming in Mexico.  I was told by two reps today that with the Iphone 4s I can activate the GSM chip and use GSM in Mexico and still take advantage of my plan.

Has anyone verified this? I would love to choose Verizon but when I travel and vacation in Mexico I need to have coverage.

You would have to unlock the sim to put in a sim card from the local sim in Mexico. Verizon has the best of both worlds. You get good coverage in us plus they have global plans for roaming or Mexico plan. To unlock there is criteria though. Not sure if atat would need to unlock to use the sim slot for global coverage. You can use wifi there if you don't need to make phone calls you can shut off the network when you don't need it. Alot of things you can do on wifi.
