Heey Im from Germany as an exchange student and Im going to stay here for about 9.5 months now. I want to buy the iPhone 4s and I wanted to ask if I buy it in a week and then be a verizon costumer and after 60 days I let it unlock, will I be able to use it after 10 month in Germany? I mean will it stay unlocked for ever? Or just for 10 months?

Phones stay unlocked.   The 10 month rule is just Verizon's way of stopping people buying lots of phones, getting them unlocked and then reselling elsewhere.

Well, but I could sell it in Germany so what does this 10 month rule do?

I just went through the unlock procedure and the rep on the phone told me it wouldn't compelete until I insert a foriegn SIM (I don't have a foriegn micro sim handy at the moment). I haven't gotten the unlock message in itunes yet. Has anyone gotten the unlock message in iTunes without inserting a foriegn SIM?

That part actually turned out to be incorrect; sorry about that...error on my part. Even after a VZW unlock, you will not get the unlock confirmation in iTunes.

The reason for this is that Verizon has imposed an MNC/MCC restriction which prevents use of US AT&T/T-Mobile SIMs even if they unlock the phone for you. The iTunes message only appears if the phone is 100% unlocked.

So the rep is correct in that the only way to confirm that the unlock is successful is by testing it out with a foreign SIM.

I wish there was a way for me to edit the first post to fix the error but I can't :smileysad:

Any word on the carrier settings page? I don't see this one either. A screenshot showing it would be nice.

I just called to unlock it...The whole process took less than a minute. However, the tech/rep suggested me to sync up with iTunes once I have a different SIM card to complete the process.  I cannot see anything on my device. I am planning to get a microsim and test it out, just to be sure.

I was wondering the same thing... it's been a few hours since I called and had my phone unlocked...  I'm starting to wonder if there's any way that we can verify that our phone has been unlocked without having to travel outside the US first... It would really suck to go overseas and then discover that your phone is about as useful as a brick becuase the unlock process wasn't completed.

If this is the case, then you can just purchase a prepaid phone for while you are there.

Here's a video of the "Carrier" menu in Settings

If you have a foreign SIM you can test it while still in the US. As long as you don't get the "SIM not valid" message you're good to go.
