Weird call forwarding to ATT home behavior

When callers call my cell phone (iPhone 5s) and it is on call forwarding to my home ATT number, they get a message, "Please enter the area code followed by the phone number" from my ATT voicemail, but they don't get this message when calling my home phone directly. Anyone else have this experience or thoughts?
