Well to my knowledge, you can't.  (At least not out of the box so to speak)  You can always purchase ringtones (including music snippets) of your favorite artists.  With some third party apps (iTunes used to be able to do this), you can make custom ring tones from your own music collection of which you can use with your iPhone... (Search the app store ringtone creater)

 

You can also get additional alarm clock apps which will allow you to play music to alert you.  (many of these are free... search the app store for 'alarm clock'.)

Like dbbrass mentioned, you can create custom ringtones for use with contacts either by using one of the many ringtone creator apps or you can create them yourself in iTunes (there are threads on here that mention the steps and you can also do an internet search). As for Alarms...other than using one of the alarm apps that may allow you to use music other than what the iPhone natively allows there is no official way to do so at this time.
