i would like to add a single area code to all of my contacts that don't currently have an area code.

BREDEA27, being able to add the area code to all of your contacts is certainly important. Currently we don't have a way for you to add the area code to all of your contacts at the same time. In order to add the area code to all of your contacts, you will need to add the area code to each individual contact.

Even if you are not required to dial all ten digits of the phone number, each number has one already assigned. You need to add the specific area code already assigned to each number.
