eSIMs, should we have a spare?

Prior to upgrading my iPhone recently, something happened in the process that borked my eSIM. Apple couldn't help, a verizon "reseller" couldln't help -- I had to go to a corporate Verizon Mobile store.
Each vendor I visited all shared the same question: Why can't we have a spare "eSIM" just like we could with a physical chip? And how this problem fits in with a host of other issues that seem to account for poor planning. That includes the corporate Verizon rep, who confided to me that eSIMs "were a mess and are creating a lot of problems".
But I agree, more work needs to be done with eSIMs and I absolutely never want to go through that again. The specification should account for it and offer us a spare or some other mechanism.
