For the past 2 weekss or so, I've had to dial the area code for local numbers that I NEVER had to before. What's up with this? All my contacts are saved pretty much without the area code so I have to manually dial the entire number now.

This is indeed a strange occurrence. I would like to try some steps here, can you please power off/on the device?
Please let us know how this works out?

We would like for you to do a Network Reset on the device. Resetting network settings won't delete any of your apps or personal data, but will erase saved Wi-Fi passwords and Bluetooth connections.
- From a Home screen, swipe up or down from the center of the display to access the apps screen. These instructions only apply to Standard mode and the default Home screen layout.
- Navigate: Settings. ...
- Tap Reset network settings.
- Review the info then tap Reset settings. ...
- To confirm, review the info then tap Reset.
