I'm not able to send iMessages anymore although I am connected to wifi. It keeps saying waiting for activation. Is there anyway around that? I am out of the country for a couple of months so I suspended my contract until I get back to the states

You may need to contact Apple about this as its their feature that isn't working. Not really sure what's going on but it should work over wifi just as it would with an iPod touch...which your phone essentially is right now.
Do you have your email address selected to use iMessages and FaceTime? Since your phone number is currently suspended you can't send messages using it like you normally would but you should be able to do it with your Apple ID email address.
Yes, it's set up but it keeps saying "waiting for activation"
