Isent the newest iOS 5.0.01. One of my iphones I did it on the iPhone itself.
That means you were already on 5.0.0 if the iPhone did it itself. If you are on a lower build than 5.0 you have to update it using iTunes.
5.1 just released , will download at home
What I ment was I go to settings general software update.
What tidbits means to say is that pre-5.0.0, you had to update the iPhone by plugging it into a computer and run iTunes to update, the option to update the iPhone from the Settings app on the iPhone wasn't available, when Apple released iOS 5.0.0, it was the last iOS update that required the use of a Mac or PC to update, the OP is still using iOS 4.x.x
