Are alerts killing my battery?

I have a Samsung Intensity III. Well I somehow got signed up into these news/weather and other alerts. It's just random stuff that will pop up on my screen when I'm not using the phone.I usually just ignore them. Well I've noticed my battery seems to be draining faster. And this is a basic phone so it shouldn't be. Actually started the day with 3 bars and by 9am it was down to 1. I had to shut it off. Then back at lunch time it was back to 3. So I'm wondering are these notifications doing something. My phone will be asleep so to say then they come up. Could it having to wakeup to display this stuff be draining my battery.

And how do I shut these things off?
