I had read reviews prior to purchasing this phone, and the reviews said that the camera has a zoom function. However, I can not find this feature. How do you zoom with the camera in order to take a picture?

I believe the zoom function works after you take the picture ... goofy, I know.  While viewing the photo you want zoomed, press the right soft key, should be an option to zoom/rotate.
