You'll need to call customer service or dial *611 to have Verizon disable voicemail.

I tried that twice.
I was on hold for more than 25 minutes each time.
Get your act together, Verizon, or I'm going to dump you -- there are several good carriers out there.

I am tempted, but Verizon claims to be the best. Hmmmm.
I've been on phone for 30 min so far but I'm gonna wait this out today. Android's current version DOES NOT NOTIFY RECEIPT OF VOICE MAIL. That's why I'm going to disable voice mail.

mmsquinn, we value your loyalty and we never want to see you go. We understand the importance of making sure you are receiving all of your Voicemail notifications. Let's review. When did this concern start? May we have the Make/Model of your device? Also, can you please let us know what happens when you dial *86?
