I don't understand the fees

Why is it that we're getting nickeled and dimed for everything with Verizon?  My phone isn't working correctly. Verizon can't fix it. Solution? Send it back and they will give you a new phone BUT you have to pay for the new phone AND pay to have them fix and restock the broken phone.  BAD customer service. It's not my fault you sold me a bad phone.

That's not true at all.  Your Verizon warranty is good for 1 year.  If your phone has a manufacturer's defect within that 1 year, Verizon will send you a replacement phone for free.  However, if it is determined your phone does not have a manufacturer's defect, you must pay for the replacement phone.  You can't expect Verizon to replace a broken, lost, or stolen phone for free.  Now, if you purchased insurance from Asurion, you can file a claim with them.  They charge a deductible, but that has nothing to do with Verizon.  Of course, you knew that when you purchased the insurance.

I think he's talking about the $35 restocking fee on exchanging a new purchase for a different model.

There is no restocking fee if you let them exchange for a different unit of the same model.

Unfortunately, Verizon says its not a problem with the phone but rather the "simple" software that comes with Basic phones. Customer Service informed me that because only 5% of customers use basic phones, they don't put as much time and energy (and money) into them to make the phone work great because that's not their main customer base.  Then they tried to sell me a smart phone.  Regardless if I'm in the 5% or the 95% group, I'm still a paying customer that would like a quality product.

My wife has an LG Revere and it seems to be a great little basic phone.  But yes, Verizon's business model is tailored toward high-end smartphone users who use lots of data.  Their business is not selling phones, it's selling voice and data network capacity.  There are probably better options for basic phone users than Verizon.

I have the LG Revere too. Just got it 3 weeks ago.  Lots of trouble with texting and sending and receiving calls/texts.

My wife doesn't text, but voice works fine on her phone.
