I just bought my 9 year old a basic Samsung phone. I am embarassingly asking how to set up the voice mail.

Here's a link to Verizon's instructions: http://www.verizonwireless.com/b2c/landingpages/voicemail.jsp
Or, as soupcannon said, press and hold 1 (Speed dial 1, normally set to voicemail by default). It will actually call *86, which is a shortcut to your voice mailbox from your phone. If, for some reason, you are out of your "home area", roaming, or in an "extended service" area, *86 will not work. I have been in the habit of changing the # called by Speed dial 1 to my full 10 digit cell #. That way it will connect to my voicemail automatically no matter where I am calling from.
Hope this helps,
Suzy
