The earpiece on my LG Extravert just stopped working. As far as I know nothing triggered it. When I call someone now I cant hear anything that they are saying. What's worse is that my phone won't allow me to switch to speaker phone. And the worst thing of all is that the microphone is also broken.
So I have no way of using my phone as a phone.
Please help, any suggestion would be appreciated.

For me at least it just randomly started to work again about a week and a half afterwords. I don't know if the same will hold true in your case. A Verizon store may be able to help. If not just call LG or Verizon and see what they recommend.

This is the 3rd time this has happened to my son's phone out of nowhere. I'm not sure if it is still in warranty? We want to get a smart phone for him but not until his birthday in November.

Oh wow! Have you tried removing the battery from the phone and placing a call again? Is there any physical or liquid damage to his phone?

We tried everything. Even inserting headphones and taking them out. ( it
worked one time before) it didn't work this time. Any way we went to
verizon store and it was 1 month past warranty expiration so we activated
an old motorola droid 1 for him to use. It is just frustrating because in
the last year and a half he had 8 of those phones and 6 all had the
earpiece speaker issue. The other 2 were broken from being dropped but I'm
sure after a month or 2 the earpiece issue would have shown up.
