LG Octane freezes/shuts off when choosing emoticon in a text

I have the same problem. After inserting an emoticon within a text message, then pressing send, it will reboot the phone. There  was no change after performing a Master Reset on the phone. Can't tell if it's a firmware/bootloader  or hardware problem. Can you tell someone to update the firmare? The  only way to get around this is to not use emoticons.
