My CDMA phone won't work in Italy, but can I turn it on to get phone numbers from my contacts? Or is the phone totally dead?

Verizon told me my VX 8300 will not operate in Italy, what I want to know is can I turn it on to get phone numbers from my contacts?

The phone isn't dead it just doesn't have the rights radios to work in europe
