I was online yesterday to look at phones. The Samsung Gusto 2 "sold" for $49.99. While was on a new phone chat with a Verizon agent, the cost of the phone went up to $79.99. Did any one else have this experience? Was anyone else online yesterday to verify that the Gusto 2 was listed for $49.99?

Not unusual. It's online pricing vs. retailer vs. vs. Corporate vs. over the phone pricing. Each has their own pricing and inventory. Often Online will usually be the cheapest. Usually Corporate and over the phone pricing is the same. Retailer or online pricing would be cheaper. Also there could have been a sale that expired.

Yes, it was $49.99 on the Verizon website but you can buy it for $14.95 at Walmart. Same phone Samsung Gusto 2 and it comes with $10 to use on one of the 3 plans they offer.
