Samsung Brightside wont txt

My son Brightside will not sent outgoing txt massages he can receive massages and he can send one only if he goes thru contact and click on the envelope symbol, but he cant send a message just by going thru the message icon at the home page

I have blocked all data on his phone but not the texting / messages options.

What happens when he clicks the Messaging Icon on the home screen?  Is it trying to use a messaging app that uses data?  Does he get an error message when he tries to compose a message?

the app working, we send the message and dont get any error message, but the other side wont get it. (and we try few numbers)

Has the phone been reprogrammed to the VZW network lately? Dial *228, option 1 to reprogram the phone to the network.

Let's get this resolved. Is he sending text messages or picture messages? Is he able to receive them? If you haven't already, please power the phone off and on and retest.
