Well, you could change your VM to explain the screen issue, and ask for callers to please leave a call back number.
Otherwise, if the option is available after each missed call, dial *69 to find out.

I know how important it is to identify missed calls. Unfortunately, when a call is not answered a connection is not made with our towers. Which means we would not have any record of an unanswered call. I would definitely encourage you to implement of budone's suggestions until you are able to replace your phone. In the interim please let me know if you have any additional questions or concerns.
