credit nightmare

I have had a balance on my credit report haunting me for a few years. At first I want going to pay it due to the poor service I received when I first purchased my house. I was reported to a collection agency and it affected my purchase of a car. I paid the balance of $942, and it never disappeared from my credit. It sits there in full. It's obviously paid since Verizon gave me a nice offer to come back. How can I have this nightmare end?
