Autopay - charged late fees

I just moved to Verizon internet from optimum. I signed up for Autopay and it clearly told me that Autopay had been setup. After a month, I receive a bill from Verizon saying that I owe late fees.

I went into the account and using the same credit card paid off the bill. When I contacted customer service (this process is buggy, I lost contact with the agent multiple times and it needs to be updated). The agent told me that the autopay setup takes 2 billing cycles to be activated. In that case, why does the main page on my account show that Autopay has been setup?

I don't mind paying the late fees if it was my fault. But this process was just painful. I am seriously thinking of going back to Optimum. The internet speed is comparable and I never had this kind of aggravation from them -- even though they are a much smaller local company.
