Change account password

I wanted to change my password today and when I did so I got a message stating I can't use symbols or spaces in my password. Meanwhile, the text states I can use a symbol in my password. Very confusing. I changed my password to one without a symbol, but I have a password system I use that uses symbols. I'd rather be able to use a symbol than just numbers in my password for security reasons.  Has anyone else had this problem?
