I opened a Verizon internet account for an apartment I was living in with 2 roommates in 2020. I moved out of the apartment in May 2022 and updated my account information to one of my roommates as they were continuing to live in the apartment and he would take on the billing. This roommate moved out of the apartment in ~July 2023 and closed out the account. However, he did not pay the remaining bill balance for the router. I was never notified of the outstanding balance as I no longer lived at the address (I never lived at the address the account was last used for) and all of the billing info was no longer my information.
I received a notice from my credit card company that my credit score dropped about ~150 points due to $200 collection from Verizon. I have been unable to remove this from my credit score even though I never knew of the outstanding balance and was not responsible for it. The amount has since been paid off by my former roommate. The bills have been paid by someone with completely different information than myself for over 15 months and Verizon never questioned it and then reported it which has altered my credit score significantly and made moving apartments / getting credit cards extremely difficult.
I will do my best to avoid using verizon for internet/tv in the future and am heavily considering switching my wireless carrier (currently verizon) as I canโt risk this happening again and am very aggravated.
