Hello everyone,
I had migrated my phone services from Verizon to a different carrier on July 6, 2021. Immediately following having ported my mobile numbers over to my new carrier, I contacted Verizon Support via Chat on the Verizon Wireless website to address some questions regarding the ported numbers from Verizon and more importantly to pay and close my account. During the same chat session with the Verizon Customer Service Representative, I requested the total balance owed on my account, which I immediately paid, followed by a request to discontinue service and close my account. I informed the representative of my intent to close my account when I requested the balance and explained that I had to change wireless carriers because my Verizon bill had increased to a point where I could no longer afford it.
At the end of the chat session, I was prompted to receive a copy of the transcript, which I elected to receive; however, I still have yet to receive the copy. Fortunately, prior to seeing the prompt, I had the foresight of copying and pasting the entire session into an email that I sent to myself. Where I went wrong was that I used my work email account, which I can no longer access due to my employer merging with a larger company and assuming a different company/domain name. I can submit a ticket to our IT department to have them recover the email; however, since it is a personal matter and not business-related, it is at the bottom of their priority list. I would like to avoid that if possible; however, should it become necessary, I can make the request.
Recently, I pulled a copy of my credit report and saw a collection account labeled "VERIZON WIRELESS" with a balance owed of $325. I disputed the account with the credit bureau and got the results back today, which only resulted in the status getting updated to show "Account charged off. $325 written off. $325 past due as of Jan 2024." That amount is nearly three times my monthly bill when I was a Verizon customer, so I am puzzled as to how it could possibly have increased to $325 when I paid the requested payoff amount. All my phones were owned outright with no open contracts, equipment-related or otherwise, and the only contract I had was the initial two-year one when I first started using Verizon as my wireless carrier in 2016. Having been a wireless customer for more than five years, this situation is disappointing.
I am reaching out to the community for any guidance or assistance in resolving these issues. Any advice or support you can provide would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you for your attention, and I look forward to any assistance you can offer.
Best regards,
John

TL;DR: I switched from Verizon to another carrier in 2021 and paid my final bill during the cancellation chat. However, I now have a $325 collection notice from Verizon on my credit report, which I disputed but came back as valid. Just looking for advice on how to resolve this issue.

Oh, no! Dealing with service issues can be overwhelming, especially if an old Verizon account was sent to collections. We want to guide you in the right direction.
We always refer written off accounts to the collection agency number. If you wish to obtain more information, please reach out to our Recovery Operations Team at800-852-1922 (Monday - Friday 7:00 AM - 7:00 PM Central Time).
Hope this information helps.
