Does an extended warranty automatically cover phones I buy later?

I have maintained an extended warranty on two lines for several years.

If I buy a new phone, does the warranty automatically cover it?  I thought that I read in a Verizon post that the warranty does not cover a new phone on the same line.  Is that true?
