Spent over 2 hours with someone on the chat feature today to tell them I wanted to close my account and disconnect my service. They refuse to do it! Kept saying “working on it” and running their specials by me. I firmly said “I want to disconnect my service” they would disappear for 20-30 minutes. Then start all over. I’m so infuriated right now. This can not even be legal. This is why I may not ever go back to Verizon. What do I do? Just stop paying?

With it being a major holiday and all the Verizon stores closed, I suspect whomever you were chatting with was overseas and couldn't access much. Try again tomorrow. I found this on the website regarding contact options:

Hopefully they're not like my cable ISP was when I disconnected my ancient VoIP landline...had to argue with a representative for nearly 20 minutes before he finally caved in and did the disconnect.
I'm not a Verizon employee, just another customer trying to help.
