I am using an iPhone 14. I added TravelPass days options to my account before leaving US but did NOT upgrade my plan to include international services. (Was never told that was an option until too late!) I Purchased eSIM in Spain. Turned off my U.S. number except when on WiFi at home in Spain. Still got charged for multiple days of use. I got multiple texts from Verizon with a LINK to check my TravelPass days. Clicked it. Showed ZERO days used. Every time I checked. No clue until I checked my actual bill online. Chat with agent. Says that ZERO use just meant I didn’t have it on my plan! Says I must use airplane mode to avoid charges. That’s ridiculous as we all know- NOTHING works when in airplane mode including my Spain ESIM so that is not a solution. Agent could give me no answer except to upgrade my line- pay more of course- to include international service. I have everything turned off for US line - how do I avoid the charges & still use my Spain eSIM? Verizon agent was useless. I asked for a supervisor EIGHT times & agent replied I was not cooperating. I was NEVER rude I chat- just wanted a supervisor after agent could not tell me what to do.

If you turned on WiFi to use your Verizon number, then that would be the cause of the Travel Pass charges because WiFi usage is using data. Texting from overseas on the Verizon number will also trigger Travel Pass. Many apps can run in the background, or if you tend to leave apps open all the time, if those apps are configured to run through your US phone number, they will still be running on the US number when you're abroad.
In order to avoid triggering Travel Pass charges and have everything go through your Spanish eSIM, you'd have to select the Spanish eSIM as the primary number, and make sure all your apps are either completely shut off or re-routed to run through the Spanish phone number.

Thank you. The chat agent was incapable of explaining to me why I was accruing charges. The only response I got was use airplane mode which is completely unhelpful. Also- if I’d been told (in the first place !)a $10/month upgrade to my plan would avoid TravelPass charges I would have done that for my time in Europe. By the way- followed a link posted by Verizon in response to another person’s similar question & the link said it was applicable to iPhone 6! Pretty bad…

You're welcome. Sorry to hear whomever you spoke with earlier didn't tell you this. From what I've read in the forums, some representatives are definitely better than others, but that's true for any organization as employees are at varying levels of experience.
As for upgrading to Unlimited Ultimate to get the benefit of built-in Travel Pass, do take note that international usage has some pretty firm caps and is not "unlimited". Also, if you are currently under contract somehow (device deal, promotional pricing, etc.) you can't change your service plan without breaking the contract. I have read of others switching around between service plans to take advantage of the Unlimited Ultimate benefits while abroad, and then when they come home, switch back to a cheaper plan, but it really only works well when you have a bring your own device or financing your device independently of Verizon.
