Verizon Set Up Dummy Account, Didn't Close It, and Sent It to Collections

I set up a new Verizon Mobile account online and attempted to port over my phone number.  The port failed and I was escalated through multiple levels of tech support to resolve.  Initial tech support placed a dummy phone number on the original account to keep it active until my number was ported over.  Higher level tech support was forced to create a new account to complete the port.  They told me the old account would be deactivated.  A couple of months later, I receive a bill and a letter reporting that my account is going to collections. This was the dummy account they set up and never closed.  I had no idea it was still active and Verizon was billing me for it until they sent the account to collections.  I have not been able to resolve this with Verizon, because the account was never activated and they cannot access it.  It is now in collections.  Verizon support screwed up, has messed up my credit, and never billed me or notified me until they sent my account to collections.  I have wasted hours on this error by Verizon.  I also have FIOS.  As soon as I possibly can, I am leaving Verizon completely for any other provider because they screwed up, messed up my credit, and have done nothing to help me or resolve this.  This is beyond unconscionable.
