on a recent trip to Arizona from Washington we upgraded our phones (4) and signed up for three new watch lines. Our home is in Washington and Washington is the address on the billing. ALL lines are now being taxed in both Washington and Arizona. Verizon customer service is unable to provide any explanation other than we bought the phones in Arizona. Anyone else have this issue? convoluted copy and paste below

I have the same problem. For at least two years only one of my four lines has been charged both Arizona and Minnesota surcharges. All four lines reside in Minnesota and all four phones were purchased in MN. I have spent at least an hour with the chat representatives who have given a bunch of stupid explanations as to why the one line has the Arizona surcharges and the other three do not. Makes me wonder whether this is a mistake or a prevalent problem that most people do not because the monthly surcharge is less than $3. I can't get anyone at Verizon to give me an answer that makes sense. How can Verizon charge Arizona state and city surcharges to customers who are not in Arizona?

Ken621, we want to make sure we can answer your questions about the taxes and surcharges you're seeing on your bill. Purchases made in AL, AZ, CO, IL, NM, ND and SD are not charged the sales tax when you first purchase the device and are charged monthly instead. This is the reason why you see the sales tax and surcharges when you purchase a device with a DPP in these states even if you're using the device in another state.

Thanks but your explanation makes no sense. All of my four devices and my plan were purchased in MN - we paid applicable sales tax when the devices were purchased many months ago. There are surcharges on only one of my 4 lines of about $3 each month for the last 18 months. The surcharges are for AZ and Mariopa ( a county in AZ). Verizon cannot charge sales tax every month for 18 months. I see a lot of customers complaining about getting charged for surcharges in more than one state. What’s the fix for this?

Ken621, apologies for any confusion. The taxes are based on where the line is registered too. The account as a whole has an address and then the lines themselves have their own address so if people on the same plan live in another state they can register as so. Here is how to change your service/billing address: https://www.verizon.com/support/how-to-change-billing-or-service-address-video/.

This a screw up on Verizon’s part. They started applying this surcharge when my daughter upgraded her phone. She has never lived in AZ, did not buy the phone in AZ, and never registered an address in AZ. Someone at Verizon assigned an AZ address to her line when they handled the upgrade online. I have spent more than three hours on this and only today got the correct answer from a supervisor after being on hold and talking to another customer rep for nearly an hour. Verizon is now supposedly looking into the problem. I have dealt with 4 different Verizon customer reps who have given me 5 different answers as to why the AZ surcharges are on the line. All the answers were wrong all tried to justify why the charges were correct. Only today do I get a supervisor who tells me why surcharges are on the line and also agrees that Verizon has never had an address in AZ for this line associated with my account. Customer service has been very substandard on this issue.

Hi, do you know if this was ever resolved? I contacted customer service, and they said they would also fix the issue. We live in a Tri-State area where three states are within 5 minutes of each other. So, when we upgraded to a different store than normal, we got charged SD Sales tax and Iowa Taxes! A different line is paying Nebraska Tax! Could you tell me what is up with this????

I’ve had this same issue for a year and a half now. Verizon somehow managed to fix it for one of my lines last spring (2022) when I first caught the issue, but the problem has persisted since for my other line despite repeated calls to customer service over a 6-month period. They’ve been incredibly frustrating to deal with and have wasted a significant amount of my time.

Having the same issue. Moved from AZ to MN changed my billing address and service address on the app. The following bill I started being billed for MN surcharges and taxes and AZ. Thought is was because I had made the change billing period. No, I am now still being billed for both AZ and MN. Called customer service and they said on their end they still see my service address as AZ but I see MN on the app. Customer service also informed me that simply because I have an AZ area code I was charged. Truthfully they don't know why they're double dipping but sure don't mind taking extra money!
We've already decided to leave Verizon.

I am having the same issue. I live in OH but have been charged OH and NM taxes for over 2 years on one of my 5 lines. I call monthly only to get empty promises and employees that “assure” me they will fix it. They won’t let me talk to a supervisor. The only compensation I have received is $20. Not enough for spending over a hour a month trying to get this fixed.

Since moving from IL to FL, I am also being taxes in two states. I think this is because I am still paying off the Phone (36 mo financing hasn’t ended and it was purchased in IL). I determined this because the IL taxes were reduced by about 70%. Only IL taxes that remain are sales tax (for the phone). All IL cellular taxes were removed and those are now FL (ie 911 and communications taxes). Hope that helps some of you.
