BB Pearl problems when traveling ("extended network" vs. "verizon network")

I have a BB Pearl and am in Toronto for an extended work contract. Most of the time it works fine, but in the condo I'm staying in, it randomly switches from good service (1xevdo) to no service (or 1X, same as no service). This happens regardless of where the phone is in the unit - it flips from great to nothing without my even moving it. From what I can tell, it is fine when it's on the "extended network" but it keeps trying to be on the "verizon network", and that is when it stops working. It can be in this state for hours at a time, and strangely enough happens most often late at night (although I doubt this has anything to do with the problem).
Does anyone know of a way I can get it to stop trying to be on the Verizon network and just be happy on the extended network? Will a signal booster help? I've tried a 1900mhz booster but that didn't do anything - perhaps I need a dual-band one?
thanks in advance for any assistance, this is driving me nuts!

Sorry, but with most ( if not all ) of Verizon Wireless' phones, you can not disable the Verizon Wireless network ( ie: Making the phone "roam only", instead of automatic or home only ). So, the phone will always look for a Verizon Wireless signal first, even if there isn't one around, then will go to extended network or roaming.
Also, I see that you said you're in Toronto? I hope you're on a Canada plan or have the global data plan for your Blackberry. If not, calls made and recieved while in Canada are $0.69 per minute, and email and web without the global data plan is $0.002 per kb...
